Start at Tank-Ha Dive Center with an SDI instructor, complete required online study and pool practice, then make two reef descents to 40 feet. Instructors such as Coral, Alma, Julian, Boris, and Paul work closely with beginners. Lunch is on your own, and hotel pickup costs extra.

“We had an amazing time. Coral was our instructor, and was awesome. Very helpful and patient as we learned the scuba gear. Took us down to some great sights and fish. Pointed out huge eels hiding in the caves. Couple people in the group had a tough time defending and equalizing the pressure (tip, blow harder than you think) and she helped stay with them to get them down to the bottom. Highly recommended this tour, and Tank-Ha as a diving option!!”

Meet at the Riu Yucatan for a PADI theory lesson, shallow pool practice, and one boat outing to a local reef. You will use full equipment, learn with an English or Spanish instructor, and reach up to 36 feet with an instructor aboard. Javier is one named instructor associated with this experience.

“Terrible experience. The training is for less than an hour and is very rushed. The practice "tank" is actually a 3ft resort pool in which we were taught to breathing and hand signs for about 20 minutes. There was no pool lesson on equalizing pressure etc. We spent more time waiting for the boat to arrive than on the lessons itself. I felt very uncomfortable after the lesson and chose not to go into the ocean. My husband went and within 10ft in the ocean felt ear pain and couldn't complete it. This would've been identified if the practice tank was deeper. We spent a lot of money for nothing...…”
