4 tours  ·  from $57

On the first two days of November families sit with their dead in candlelit cemeteries at Míxquic, in Oaxaca and across the capital. These are working vigils, not performances, and the guided visits below explain the altars, the marigolds and the etiquette expected of a visitor. Places are limited and go weeks ahead.

Mexico City: Day of the Dead Guided Tour

1.Day of the Dead Guided Tour

★★★★★★★★★★3.4 · 97 reviews · 8 hours · from $57Our pick

On November 1, join an English or Spanish speaking guide such as Clara, Dana, or Ruben for an eight-hour night tour. See Mexico City landmarks, visit Panteón de Dolores, then ride a trajinera through Xochimilco with live mariachi. The experience is moving and memorable, but traffic, crowds, weather, and guide organization can affect the day.

Day of the Dead Tour in Mexico City

2.Day of the Dead Tour in Mexico City

★★★★★★★★★★3.5 · 78 reviews · 7 to 8 hours (approx.) · from $73

Spend an evening learning about Día de Muertos at a Mexico City cemetery, then ride a trajinera through Xochimilco with live mariachi. The tour runs about seven to eight hours, begins at 6pm, includes round-trip transport from a meeting point, and is limited to ages 12 and up. Expect large groups, holiday traffic, and no included food or drinks.

“Price is fair for what it is, experience is average at best. highlight for us were the Mariachi band at the 'campcha' at the end. Tour started at time at around 18:00 though queuing to board buses started much earlier at 17:30. From there it was a 1hr30min ride to the cemetery. Our tour consisted of 38 people with only 2 guides though only 1 Gabe any information to the group. The ride was long due to traffic and the brief history/culture show we were given by Lilly was erratic and opinionated. At arrival to the cemetery it was required to park further away needing a 15min walk to entrance.…”

Day of the Dead Tour in San Andres Míxquic From Mexico City

3.Day of the Dead Tour in San Andres Míxquic From Mexico City

★★★★★★★★★★3.7 · 52 reviews · from $94

Travel from Mexico City to San Andrés Mixquic in a small group or private vehicle. With a guide such as Joe or Flor, you’ll explore decorated streets, learn about ofrendas, visit the cemetery, and try pan de muerto with atole. The early schedule helps limit traffic, but November 2 is the key date for the candlelit Alumbrada.

“Unfortunately, the tour was a total failure. Flor, the guide, told us nothing about the traditions Dia de los Muertos, and we were taken to a cemetery where there were no ceremonies... The whole group was very disappointed, especially since it was an expensive attraction.”

“Pablo was our guid and he was amazing. We walked all over the city learning about Oaxaca and Dia de Muertos. It will give you a great overview of the city. During Dia de Muertos we went to the Cemetery which was the highlight. That being said the the food, market and chocolate marker were all great.”
