3.Teotihuacan Early Access Guided Tour with optional Lunch

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 6,138 reviews · 8 hours (approx.) · from $39

Leave central Mexico City at 6:20 a.m. for Teotihuacan before the worst heat and crowds. A bilingual guide leads you along the Avenue of the Dead, past major pyramids, murals, and temples, followed by an obsidian workshop and optional Mexican lunch. Guides such as Alan, Antonio, Lily, and Alex have earned especially warm praise, but lunch and shopping stops may not suit everyone.

“Everyone was kind and helpful. The bus ride was comfortable. The food after was pretty ok too. Once getting to the site I would ask for your ticket. We decided to use the bathroom at gate 2 and they wouldn’t let us in because we didn’t have the site ticket. So make sure and get that. We had to buy another one to get back in. I would also suggest that starting early at the moon pyramid would make more sense. By the time we got there it was crowded. These are just my ideas but still I enjoyed it.”

Volare provides hotel pickup from selected Mexico City areas, coffee before takeoff, a Mexican buffet breakfast with mariachi music, a landing toast, and a flight diploma. Add three hours at the pyramids, or return to Mexico City after breakfast.

“Hot air-ballooning over these pyramids at sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The hot air balloons don't have doors, so there is some climbing and jumping into the basket involved. It would have also been nice if there were 2 fewer people in each basket, since it felt like we were packed in like sardines in a can. The loss of one star is for the quality of the breakfast buffet, and the long wait once we arrived at the location until we actually got sorted into groups and went off to get on the balloons. The transportation to and from CDMX was timely and comfortable, but some improvements to the…”

The small pyramid group can include up to 14 people, though transport may hold up to 20. Guides such as Susana and José receive especially strong praise.

“First of all, we could not reach the ruins in time. We were about 40 minutes later than when we should have been there. The driver had no input or information about what we were going to see. There was a TV monitor inside the van which could have been very well used to provide some history about the place we were about to visit. Of course that was not done. Once we reached the pyramids the guide turned out to be a person who was not at all comfortable in English. We had a very difficult time understanding her. She also could not answer most of our questions.”
