Watch and Swim with Dolphins in the Wild

1.Watch and Swim with Dolphins in the Wild

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 668 reviews · 3 hours 30 minutes (approx.) · from $105Our pick

Meet your biologist guide at Marina Vallarta for a 3.5-hour search for wild bottlenose dolphins. A hydrophone helps locate them by sound, and small groups may enter the water when dolphins choose to approach. Guides such as Camilla, Gema, and Cesar also explain marine life, safety, and conservation.

“As with anything wild, the expectation should be low because you cannot predict what they will do or where they will be 100% of the time. That said, we were blown away with the pod we were able to interact with. Gemma was great with directing us and educating us about the dolphins interactions and behaviors. Jorge was our captain and his skills are unmatched. Thank you both Gemma & Jorge for an amazing experience we will never forget. It was truly the highlight of our stay in PV.”

2.Whale and Dolphin Watching with a Biologist in Puerto Vallarta

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 666 reviews · 4 hours (approx.) · from $105Top rated

Spend about four hours at sea with a marine biologist such as Jemma, Gemma, or Camilla, watching humpback whales and dolphins near Puerto Vallarta. A short land briefing, small covered boat, hydrophone recordings, research activities, sandwiches, and a maximum of 20 people make this both an educational outing and a serious wildlife excursion.

“It was very informative and the Marine Biologist, Jama was very enthusiastic and answered all of our questions. There was no guessing where the whales were. She and her Captain were able to find them is several places! We saw several breaches and were able to listen to the whale songs with a hydrophone. We saw several babies (huge). We then went to see several groups of dolphins. Apparently they stay in their territory. Would highly recommend this tour!”

Dolphin & Whale Watching in Puerto Escondido

4.Dolphin & Whale Watching in Puerto Escondido

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 278 reviews · 3 hours (approx.) · from $65

Set out from Puerto Escondido at 7am with Omar’s Sportfishing to search for four kinds of wild dolphins, humpback whales, sea turtles, rays, and seabirds. Guides such as Alex, Johnny, Fernando, and José share marine-life facts while a small boat carries up to 10 people. Swimming or snorkeling may be possible, but jellyfish and sea conditions can prevent it.

“We had a great experience with Alex! He took his time and knew where to look. We saw sea turtles, manta rays, and a large school of dolphins. The highlight was seeing 7 whales, including 2 pairs of calf/mother whales! Only downside was that we did not swim with the dolphins as advertised. We took a dip in the ocean, but it was probably not safe to join the dolphins, but we would have liked to know it wasn't an option in advance.”

Akumal: Dolphin Encounter

7.Dolphin Encounter

★★★★★★★★★★4.4 · 56 reviews · from $99

Spend 15 minutes learning about dolphins, then 40 minutes playing games, shaking fins, and watching them sing and move in Akumal’s turquoise water. English and Spanish instructors explain dolphin behavior, diet, and conservation. The program suits families, but photos cost extra and cameras are not allowed.

“We have to admit that it was a fantastic experience, thanks to the contact with the dolphins, and Frida, our guide, did a great job. We did feel a bit cheated that, in addition to paying a hefty price (€84/person for 40 minutes of contact with the dolphins), we also had to pay €240 if we wanted photos... it quickly adds up to an hour. During the interaction, the dolphins revolve around the photos, and the guide and photographer constantly keep an eye on each other, with the guide providing explanations when the photographer moves on to other groups. So, very commercially exploited!Read more”

Your English or Spanish-speaking guide and captain will search for dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating whales. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and swimming is not part of this cruise.

“Super expérience, réservée à la dernière minute. On vous amène sur un petit bateau, on vous donne masque et tuba et hop on saute à l’eau parmi les dauphins. Une expérience inédite! Je déconseille juste d’acheter le café auprès des marchands ambulants de la plage car il est vraiment pas terrible”

Cancun: Interactive Aquarium – Swim with Dolphins Splash

10.Interactive Aquarium – Swim with Dolphins Splash

★★★★★★★★★★4.1 · 49 reviews · 35 min · from $127

Meet dolphins at Interactive Aquarium Cancún inside Plaza La Isla. You will watch a dolphin presentation, learn about physiology, anatomy, and behavior, then spend 20 minutes in the water during 10 guided activities, including a kiss. Groups are limited to 10, with English and Spanish hosts.

“We loved being in the pool and interacting with the dolphins but for the money didn’t seem long enough. By the time we checked in, got changed and had a talk about the dolphin, we had a few photos then it finished. 15 minutes with the dolphins for what we paid was a bit expensive for a family on a budget. That was without any photos. We then had to pay $53 per photo or they had packages which worked out cheaper but still very expensive in total.”

“Heel slechte ervaring. Weggegooid geld dus!”
